IRS Audits are usually the following three different types:
1. CP2000 Notice or Exam letter from IRS: IRS has questions on your tax returns
filed previously. Most likely, you missed reporting certain taxable income that was
reported by your employers, customers, or financial institutions. Or you simply reported
IRS a wrong amount.
2. Audit via Local IRS Office Visit: IRS wants to see your computation and support
documents on a few items that you reported on tax returns. It is usually limited to a
few simple items. You call IRS local office and set up appointment with IRS agent.
You need to bring your computation and support documents to prove your
position. It takes 2 to 3 hours per visit. IRS often closes your case in one visit.
Maybe you need to follow up by mailing support documents and then IRS send you
a conclusion letter.
3. Full scale field audit: IRS sends you a letter which asks you to call to set up an
appointment with IRS agent at your location. The IRS letter usually has questions
on many items. The IRS agents are most likely accounting majors and quite skillful
in audit with understanding of your industry. Their supervising managers have good
experience and skills to find possible issues in your tax returns.
